Start a new survivor-benefit screen
A Veteran’s payment usually does not simply continue in the surviving spouse’s name. Notify the appropriate agencies, protect possible filing dates, and screen each survivor program separately.
□Obtain several certified death certificates
□Locate DD214 or separation documents and the marriage certificate
□Secure recent VA decisions, rating information, benefit letters, and claim records
□Notify VA and Social Security; ask how to handle any payment received after death
□Contact an accredited county VSO before deciding there is no survivor benefit
Important: Do not spend a VA payment issued for a period after the Veteran’s death until VA confirms it is payable.
