Plain-language glossary
Terms families hear first—and understand later.
These are short orientation definitions, not complete eligibility rules.
Assisted living
A residential setting offering housing, meals, supervision, and help with daily activities; it is not the same as 24-hour skilled nursing.
Community Living Center
A VA-operated nursing-home setting. Eligibility, purpose, length of stay, availability, and copays vary.
DIC
Dependency and Indemnity Compensation: a survivor benefit generally connected to a service-related death or certain qualifying total-disability histories.
Housebound
An increased Pension level for a qualifying person substantially confined to the immediate premises by permanent disability.
Medicaid LTC
Florida’s long-term-care program for people who meet program, medical, and financial requirements.
Memory care
A marketed care setting focused on dementia-related supervision; staffing, license, services, and discharge rules still must be verified.
Pension
A needs-based VA benefit for qualifying wartime Veterans or eligible survivors; it is not military retirement.
VSO
A VA-accredited Veterans Service Organization representative who can assist with VA benefit claims without charging the claimant.
